Canary Islands have a specific climat that finds it's balance under the influence of the dominant northeast, fresh and humid tradewinds. Those winds blow in a layer of air from the surface up to around 1700m. On Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria, the high mountains push the humid air up, cooling it down and forming a dens layer of clouds with lots of rain on the northern side, facing the wind. This creates a kind of rain forest very specific on these islands, while on the other side of the mountains the drier air leaves a desert like vulcanic landscape under a nearly always shining sun with clouds peeling over the top of the mountains (picture)

On the East side of the islands the calmer seas have left some accessable beaches where those trade winds blow side-onshore. This is where all the windsurf and kiteboard action takes place.
